American Idol destroys Dancing with the Stars, which had its lowest-rated episode ever

In the 9 p.m. Tuesday evening battle between country karaoke and time-wasting filler, American Idol 8 was victorious, pushing Dancing with the Stars to its lowest ratings ever.

While Dancing’s premiere week ratings beat Idol’s semi-final rounds, last night, 22.75 million people watched the second hour of the singing competition, while just 12.4 million watched the results show and dance-off, according to TV By the Numbers, which notes that the Fox series had “more than [triple Dancing’s] adult demos and pushing Dancing to its lowest rated regularly scheduled episode ever.”

Even CBS drama The Mentalist beat Dancing, suggesting that the two reality competitions have shared audiences and that scheduling them against one another is not the best idea. Both beat The Biggest Loser, which had about 8.5 million viewers during its second hour of bloat and came in fourth place.
