300 people attend Idol auditions in Puerto Rico

American Idol’s first non-U.S. state auditions did not attract the thousands of people who typically show up for the show’s auditions. Instead, “[o]nly about 300 people turned out,” UPI reported, citing Puerto Rico’s El Nuevo Dia.

In a separate story, that newspaper noted that producers kept auditions open in an attempt to get more participants. One auditioner “complained that the production team has accepted that some arrived late” despite being “handed a document [that] specified that no one could enter after 5:00 am,” according to the translated version of El Nuevo Dia’s story.

While they may not have had auditioners, the show did get complaints. In California, the WGA staged a protest, and in Puerto Rico, found support in other unions, who said that the show “is an outrage to the artistic class,” according to El Nuevo Dia (translated).
