David Cook’s brother Adam dies from cancer

American Idol 7 winner David Cook’s 37-year-old brother died of brain cancer Saturday night. He appeared on the show in the audience to support his brother, and late in March, David cancelled some concerts to be with his brother, who’d “battled cancer for more than a decade” and eventually died “at his Terre Haute home, where hospice nurses were helping Cook’s wife, Kendra, care for him,” according to the AP.

The morning after his brother died, David appeared at the Race for Hope 5K run in Washington, D.C., and ran the race, which raises money for the National Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure. “I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now. I’ve lost one but I’ve gained 9,000 ….. I will be here every year that they will have me,” he told the crowd, according to the Washington Post.

Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell both released statements about Adam’s death, according to People. Paula said, “Adam Cook was a part of our extended American Idol family who supported his brother wholeheartedly, even through his own fight. My heart goes out not only to David, but his family as well,” while Simon said, “I was incredibly saddened to hear the news. I met Adam Cook a few times at American Idol. He was an incredible guy, and right now my thoughts are with David and his family.”
