Idol Gives Back’s $75 million distributed to four charities in the US, five in Africa

The money raised during last spring’s Emmy-winning Idol Gives Back special totaled $75 million, and it was distributed to four charities in the United States and five in Africa.

That $75 million consists of “over $54 million” from American Idol viewers and the public, while corporations were responsible for the rest, the AP reports. That includes the $5 million from News Corp., FOX’s parent.

“The money was being distributed roughly equally” among nine charities, according to the AP, which looks specifically at how groups and projects are using the funds in Africa, from buying mosquito nets to help combat malaria to helping wounded people in Rwanda.

The charities are Malaria No More; Nothing But Nets; Save the Children; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF in Africa, and the Save The Children Federation, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, America’s Second Harvest, and the Children’s Health Fund in the United States.
