American Idol 6

Viewers are skipping Idol performance shows but tuning in for the results

American Idol 6’s continually lower ratings are no surprise, but week to week, there’s been a trend that offers some insight.

Variety reports that “the Tuesday performance editions of “Idol” have consistently trailed the corresponding nights of a year ago.” However, “the Wednesday results show is, on average, in line with last year.”

In other words, more people are skipping the performance shows but tuning in to see who’s been eliminated. That may be a result of the overall relatively poor group of contestants.

The difference between the episodes was certainly true this week, when Melinda Doolittle was eliminated. Variety says 28.05 million viewers watched the results show, which “was up slightly vs. the same night a year ago.” But it was also up significantly from the 23 million viewers who watched the performance show on Tuesday.
