Chris Sligh: “I actually almost dropped out”; fans “hoped I’d die” because of jokes
Chris Sligh’s exit from American Idol 6 almost came earlier than this week. The singer, who is described in almost every story as “curly-haired” by journalists who are masters of description, said that he almost left after performing “Endless Love.”
“I actually almost dropped out that week. I (asked) the guy from 19 (19 Entertainment represents American Idol and all the contestants), if I drop out when I make the top 10, can I still be on tour? And they were like ‘No, you have to get voted out,’” he told reporters during a conference call, as transcribed by USA TODAY’s Idol Chatter blog.
Chris also says that some crazy American Idol fans, the kind who should be institutionalized and not allowed to watch television, threatened his life because of his joking about the show, specifically his references to Simon Cowell’s connection to Il Divo and the Teletubbies.
“I think it kind of scared me, quite honestly. I had people who were telling me that they hoped I’d die … I would hope that people realize me joking about the show is very, very tongue in cheek,” he said, noting that he stopped joking about the show after that.
Speaking of crazy people, some conspiracy theorists suggest that his shout-out to Vote for the Worst last week (“Hi, Dave”) led FOX to get rid of him.
Chris also offered suggestions for the competition, saying, “I wish they would let songwriters sing their songs on the show. I worked really hard to do one of my originals during the semifinals, and it just didn’t work out.”
