American Idol 5

American Idol 5 concludes tonight; DialIdol, Simon Cowell predict Taylor will win

American Idol 5 concludes its 18 week run tonight at 8 p.m. ET, when either Katharine McPhee or Taylor Hicks will be crowned the next idol, after a parade of duets and appearances, including one by Clay Aiken.

Right now, it seems like a lock for Taylor to become the show’s second male winner. The only judge who matters, Simon Cowell, told Taylor after his final song, “Assuming that I was right that the show was tied [after the first two songs], then you’ve just won American Idol.” And DialIdol is predicting an easy Taylor win.

Katharine can probably blame one of the shittiest songs in the universe for her third-round loss and thus the loss of the competition. Her first single, “My Destiny,” had inspid lyrics and a black hole instead of a melody, and she also didn’t really perform it well, either. Taylor’s ballad wasn’t a whole lot better, but at least it was kind of catchy, and, as Randy told him, “you know how to make it into a Taylor Hicks song.”

The final performance show was otherwise uneventful; Paula seems to have found an, um, beverage that works for her, as she only jumped out of her seat once to scream about how her outfit matched Taylor’s. And Ryan and Simon didn’t trade insults at all.

Here’s how writers and others weighed in as to who should win (many of whom wrote before the performance show aired):
