American Idol 5

DialIdol projects Chris and Katharine are the bottom two; producer says there will be no “mockery” tonight

Chris Daughtry, once the unstoppable American Idol 5 favorite, may find himself going home fourth. DialIdol’s measurement of busy signals last night suggests that Chris Daughtry and Katharine McPhee will be the bottom two, and that Chris will go home. However, the two are close enough that they’re within the margin of error, so either one may be sent home.

On the relentlessly perky and blatantly ass-kissy podcast [MP3] produced by TV Week each week, Nigel Lythgoe did not even hint about tonight’s result. He did say, however, that they won’t be mean. “Whatever happens tonight I can assure you it will be somebody we don’t want to lose. So we’ve got to be very careful how we handle it. I don’t want to sort of make a mockery of the competition at this stage,” he said.

That’s when host Chuck Ross said, “That’s very considerate of you, and you’re always considerate of these great young people you get, Nigel, and I think that’s one of the appeals of the show.” (Oh yes,
really considerate.) That echo you can hear on the podcast is what happens when you make a recording inside Idol’s ass.
