In what may be the stupidest American Idol 4 story written to date, UPI reports that producers “are boosting security for judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul.” Why? Well, we don’t really get a transition, but the next paragraph reminds us about Simon’s reaction to Leroy Wells. And the next sentence reminds us that Leroy “watched his recorded audition from jail—after being arrested in an alleged shooting of another man.” And then? One more sentence, saying, “Said fellow judge Abdul: It is scary.” What is scary? Could we have an antecedent, please? UPI fails to actually draw any connection, instead letting the two pieces of information sit side by side so as to suggest a correlation. Hello, non sequitur. Did Leroy threaten the judges? Or did some idiot at UPI just need to file a story so he strung together some unrelated facts to create a “story”?
