American Idol “has a serious voting problem,” Broadcasting and Cable magazine reports in its May 18 issue. “Technology is thwarting democracy on American Idol,” Deborah Starr Seibel writes. “Power-dialers can skew the vote. Text-messagers have an unfair advantage. And potential hackers have a powerful new incentive to alter the vote tallies: betting on the outcome through Internet gambling sites.” The magazine runs down the problems and looks at possible solutions (such as limiting people to one vote each, and offering online voting; both were rejected by FOX). Their ultimate conclusion: “Despite fans’ repeated accusations of inaccurate results, Fox is sticking with a voting system vulnerable to serious manipulation and tampering.”
