American Idol 3

Fantasia’s number one on the charts, but behind other American Idol finalists’ singles.

Fantasia ‘s number one on the charts, but behind other American Idol finalists’ singles.
Fantasia’s single is number one on the Billboard singles chart this week. However, despite superlative remarks from Simon Cowell and others, the American Idol 3 winner’s single sold only 142,000 copies—just under half of the 286,000 Ruben Studdard sold his first week, just over half of the 236,000 Kelly Clarkson sold, and nowhere near Clay Aiken’s 393,000 copies his first week out. Billboard’s chart director tells MTV, however, that it might not be just about her: “One reason Fantasia’s not going to sell as much is there’s another year where the consumer’s been trained not to look for singles. There’s so many stores that don’t even have singles sections anymore, because there’s so few available. The money game is going to be with [Fantasia and Diana DeGarmo’s] albums.” Fantasia’s recording her album during breaks in the summer Idol tour.
