Never underestimate the passion or the power of the Claymates, Clay Aiken’s fans. More than a year after he lost American Idol 2 to Ruben Studdard, his fans still jump to his defense. Most recently, they’ve jumped on the back and started chewing at the neck of Larry the Cable Guy. The comedian, also known as Dan Whitney, said on The View that he “was on the Clay Aiken diet. That’s where you pop in a Clay Aiken CD and try to keep food down.” This prompted outrage in the form of e.mail messages, which the Daily News characterizes as “whiny missives from Aiken’s legions of fans.” Larry the Cable Guy was surprised by their reaction: “I mean, is someone actually sitting at home bent out of shape because I did a joke about Clay Aiken. It’s like, all the crap goin’ on in the world and that’s what floats your … boat.” However, he did respond to at least one fan with “a mea culpa,” the paper says.
