Even with 3.01 million viewers for the finale, Canadian Idol had “400,000 [fewer viewers] than the 3.41 million who tuned in to CTV for the American Idol finale last May. Despite all the hype, more Canadians watched American Idol than Canadian Idol,” The Toronto Sun reports. And despite CTV’s claims to the contrary—“CTV claims the series average of 2.06 million viewers makes it the most-watched, Canadian-produced series ever”—the reality is that “in the ’60s, ’70s and even into the ’80s, (when, to be fair, there was less competition), CBC routinely cracked the two million mark in season average viewing,” according to the paper.
