Simon says he’ll do a third Idol but not this fall; thinks Clay or Rueben will win.
Simon Cowell says the two American Idol 2 finalists most likely to win are Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard. Clay is “the person to beat” but calls Ruben “very, very marketable,” the New York Post reports. Simon also tells the paper he’s changed his mind about doing American Idol 3. Previously he said that he was bored with the show and wouldn’t do anything beyond a second UK Pop Idol; he’s currently casting for Cupid, a dating show he’s producing. Coming back for a third season depends upon one thing, though: “If they do it in the fall, I’ll have nothing to do with it,” Simon says. The Post reports that’s to “allow the winner more time to be turned into a star—and to protect against brand-name overkill.” Finally, the Post piece says “Cowell also revealed that Elton John is being wooed as a celebrity judge.”
