singles debut on Billboard’s Hot 100 early; Clay at 19, Ruben at 22.
The first two singles from American Idol 2’s winner and runner-up go debut on Billboard early this week. According to Billboard, “[s]treet date violations, which occur when retail outlets sell records before their release dates, result in … Clay Aiken and winner Ruben Studdard debuting prematurely on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Sales chart.” Clay’s This Is The Night debuts at number 19, and Ruben’s Flying Without Wings/Superstar debuts at 22. However, the “singles are expected to sell between 200,000 and 300,000 copies each, which would be enough to bring them on to the chart at No. 1 and No. 2, … It would be the first time that new entries would occupy the top two positions on the Hot 100,” Billboard reports (last item).
+ also: Clay doesn’t care that his single is selling more copies than Ruben’s.
