With a “dismal” fall season, Entertainment Weekly says “Fox needs a happy tune badly” from American Idol 2, which debuts next week. But FOX president Gail Berman is lowering expectations, saying the second season is “going up in a more formidable time period. So we have realistic expectations.” Paula and Simon also bash CBS’ Star Search; Simon says it “has a problem. Music in its barest form on television is about as boring as you can get. To put people on without any controversy or good versus evil, it will not work.”
