FOX is suing the company that owns the 800 numbers that are identical to the 866 numbers American Idol 2 uses. Those viewers who don’t pay close attention and dial the 800 number instead are instructed via a recording to dial a 900 number, and if they’re stupid enough to do that, they get charged $1.99. The show’s “creators seek unspecified damages, demand the fraudulent phone line be dismantled and want to block the firm from setting up any more similar numbers,” according to E! Online. Host Ryan Seacrest mentioned the problem on Tuesday’s show, telling viewers not to dial the 900 numbers.
