Adam Lambert as American Idol judge? Randy Jackson out? Unsupported rumor pandemonium!
American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert is being considered as a judge for the show’s 12th season, according to a report that says Randy Jackson may exit along with Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez (it seems like she’s quitting the Fox show).
The rumor comes via a triple-bylined—three people!—story in E! News, which is attributed to someone identified only as a “source” (No shit they’re a source; how about some actual information so we can judge that person’s credibility for ourselves?).
That person said, “They have been talking about Adam for over a month. He personifies the show, and will be a popular choice right from the start. He knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the judges’ comments, he has a human touch, and they know they can’t go wrong if they bring him on. He would be able to bring a unique perspective to the show. People love him.”
Oh, so the “source” is someone who talks like they’re paid to promote Adam Lambert. That same person also said, “Randy is great, but he’s part of the old Idol. They want to keep the soul of the show but have a new look, and for that reason he may well not be part of the new line up.”
My oh my, how dramatic those changes would be! And how obvious it is that someone is using the media here to throw ideas at the wall and/or promote someone to see what will stick. That said, while I think changing judges isn’t necessarily the kind of makeover Idol needs, Adam would be a really interesting choice, both because he has the personality and the experience of going through the exact same process that the contestants are going through.
Meanwhile, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who just happens to have a new E! reality series, told E! News, “as of this moment in time, we are still in negotiations as we are with everybody. Everything is up in the air.”
And now we can go back to not caring about American Idol.
