Lee DeWyze responds to Nigel Lythgoe’s slam by revealing he wasn’t asked to be on finale
A minor controversy arose today when Nigel Lythgoe slammed American Idol 9 winner Lee DeWyze for not presenting the trophy to Scotty McCreery on last night’s finale, but Lee has responded by calling out Nigel on his lousy producing of the show’s final moments, saying that Nigel only decided at the last second to ask him to appear on stage.
Early Thursday morning, Nigel wrote, I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn’t present the winners trophy to Scotty. Especially as he’d been on the show this Season. I guess he was shy.”
But Lee’s response suggested there was more to the story. In a long post to Twitter, he congratulates Scotty and Lauren, and then explains:
“I was not asked to be involved in the Finale. It wasn’t until about 2 minutes before they announced that Nigel had approached me and asked if he could ‘borrow’ me for a second. I didnt feel a last second jump on stage was appropriate. It was Scotty’s moment.I appreciate American Idol, and the opportunity it has given me. And the people who have made that show possible. I am not angry, or bitter etc. It was an amazing Finale, and I would have loved to be a part of it. I just wasnt asked.”
Lee’s fans are, predictably, not thrilled with Nigel, responding angrily on Twitter and getting Nigel’s attention.
Update: Nigel has responded—hilariously by saying he doesn’t want to respond—and directly contradicts Lee’s account. He wrote, “I don’t wish to continue the @leedewyze story. True, he wasn’t asked to sing but Lee knows he was asked to present the trophy a week before.”
