American Idol has its top 13 after a (mostly) efficient and swift cut from 24 to 10
In one of the best elimination shows it has ever produced, American Idol 10 now has its top 13: 10 finalists selected by viewers and three wild card picks made by the judges.
The finalists are Casey Abrams, Naima Adedapo, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Ashthon Jones, Stefano Langone, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart, Karen Rodriguez, and Pia Toscano.
Ashthon, Stefano, and Naima were picked by the judges after performing a single song; Jovany Barreto, Kendra Chantelle, and Robbie Rosen were also selected to sing for their lives, as Ryan Seacrest called it, although of course that would have been a lot more dramatic if it was true.
Despite the episode being a two-hour results show, it was actually watchable. There was some filler to re-introduce us to people who were about to get eliminated, and before the final wild card selection, we had to endure Jennifer Lopez’s new music video.
But otherwise, Seacrest didn’t engage in any of his usual cruel elimination antics, and instead just announced the cuts rapidly. It was so fast that it looked like it surprised some people, like Clint Jun Gamboa, who seemed like he was going to have a breakdown—and that was before he and his glasses were eliminated. (I was kind of hoping for a reverse Lord of the Flies situation where Jacee would come out, take Clint’s glasses off, stomp on them, and then push him toward the loser’s bench, because that guy annoys me.)
Now we just have 12 weeks of competition as we work toward a late May finale.
