Kelly says she won’t sing on Sept. 11; record label says she will.
Before Kelly Clarkson even became the American Idol, the winner of the show was scheduled to perform the national anthem at the Lincoln Memorial on Sept. 11 at the United Day of Service event. Kelly, however, told The New York Times, “I never agreed to do that. I mean, not me personally. And if anybody thinks I’m trying to market anything, well, that’s awful.” Also in the interview, she said, “I think maybe it’s a bad idea. I’m not going to do it.” Later, 19 Entertainment, the producer of the show and her management company, released a statement contradicting her: “Kelly Clarkson will sing the national anthem on September 11 in Washington, D.C. As she has previously said, she is ‘honored by the invitation.’ Media reports to the contrary are incorrect.”
