songwriters say they had Kelly under contract before American Idol.
Three songwriters tell The Star that they had American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson under contract—and she was recording an album—before she auditioned for the show, a direct violation of the show’s rules. “[S]ongwriters Michael Blum, Barry Goldberg and Goffin now claim they had Clarkson under contract a month before the “Idol” auditions began,” according to the New York Post’s recounting of The Star story, which does not appear to be online yet. According to Goldberg, “after doing five wonderful songs, she walked out”; the three songwriters have hired a lawyer “in an effort to get three of the songs released,” the Post reports. Both FOX and Kelly’s label “declined to comment.”
