How did conservative Park Gillespie manage to win Showtime’s American Candidate, considering the network’s primary audience probably isn’t all that conservative? Heck, even Park referred to Showtime as “arguably the most godless network on television.” The answer: Conservative groups mobilized to support him, encouraging even non-Showtime subscribers to vote. According to the New York Times, “the Home School Legal Defense Association sent an e-mail ‘action alert’ under the headline ‘Homeschool Dad on the Front Lines’ to its 81,000 families urging calls to vote for Mr. Gillespie.” Additionally, “Focus on the Family sent e-mail messages encouraging its supporters to call in votes for Mr. Gillespie even if they were not Showtime subscribers” and “[c]onservative radio shows also took up his cause.”
