FX’s American Candidate will seek Presidential candidate for 2004.
HBO’s Candidate 2012, a documentary that would have chronicled a 24- to 29-year-old’s 10-year quest for the presidency, “did not go forward,” according to Reuters. Now, producer R.J. Cutler, who created American High, is taking the show to FX, where it has become American Candidate, a show that will seek a candidate for President in 2004—not 2012. Much like American Idol, the show’s semifinalists will be picked by a panel of judges and narrowed by audience voting. The three finalists will compete at a convention on July 4, 2004, after which the candidate will decide whether or not to run for President. To meet the qualifications for President, candidates must be “at least 35 years old as of Jan. 20, 2005 and has lived in the States for the last seven years.” Casting will begin in January and episodes will begin airing in early 2004. A version of the show may even be launched in the UK.
