ABC cancels Extreme Makeover after just one episode

ABC has cancelled the fourth season of Extreme Makeover, the original plastic surgery reality show, after just one episode. The show was watched by an average of just 4.8 million viewers during its hour; Grey’s Anatomy repeats pulled in more viewers in the same timeslot, so it will return to Fridays.

The network planned to bring the show back in August, but after every one of its awful summer reality series failed, they instead filled its timeslot with—what else?—episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. ABC should just give up its other reality TV efforts and just renew Dancing with the Stars already.

Bringing the plastic surgery show back seemed to be a risky move: America once had an appetite for makeover shows like this, but that has since been supplanted by feel-good and more realistic reality series such as The Biggest Loser and, ironically, ABC’s own Makeover spinoff, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
