Spurlock says reality TV “opened the door for people to be more accepting of documentaries”

Morgan Spurlock, the filmmaker who directed and starred in Super Size Me, branched out into reality TV last year with FX’s 30 Days. The show returns tomorrow night for a second season.

In an interview with Time, Spurlock praises reality TV. He says the genre “opened the door for people to be more accepting of documentaries.” Specifically, he says his documentary benefited from it. “I don’t think Super Size Me would have done as well as it did in theaters had it not been for reality TV.”

That said, he adds, “I really don’t watch a lot of TV. I watch the news, and once in a while Entourage or The Sopranos. And I love 30 Days— 30 Days is a great reality show!” It’s good to know that even Oscar-nominated directors aren’t beneath shameless whoring.
