Bristol Palin, producer deny that, Tripp, 3, used a gay slur

The 3-year-old co-star of Bristol Palin’s Lifetime show, Life’s a Tripp, seems to use a gay slur in a clip from the series, though its producer says Tripp used another word, as does Bristol Palin, who blames the misread on “the lefty papers.”

In the clip, Tripp throws a tantrum after Bristol won’t let him go to the pool (she says “drunk kids” are there), and says, “Go away you [bleeped word that starts with f and ends with t]. I don’t like you.” The show partially bleeps the word and subtitles it as “f***,” but it’s extremely clear that he says a two-syllable word that ends with “t.”

It sounds just like “faggot” and nothing at all like “fuck.” However, Bristol insisted in a blog post, “This is not true. Let me be clear. I’m not proud of what he did say. Sadly, he used a different ‘f word.'” She also uses the post as an occasion to remind us that she opposes gay marriage.

Slightly more plausibly, producer Matt Lutz told Gawker that he was there and reviewed footage, and says the word is “fuck.”

Judge for yourself below. It really does not seem like “fuck” at all.

The word itself is disturbing, but Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams notes, “it’s not just the way the kid blurts out the word he’s clearly picked up around the homestead that’s so stomach turning — it’s the whole framing of that incendiary remark,” including “how the sisters can’t stop cracking up as the devilish munchkin tells them ‘I hate you.'” In addition, she writes that the gay slur is “a word the Palin family already knows its way around” as, a few years ago, then 16-year-old Willow called a detractor “so gay” and “such a faggot” on Facebook. Williams points out that “when you lob the word ‘faggot’ at someone on Facebook, eventually, someone who sleeps on Bob the Builder sheets is going to throw it right back in your face.”
