Ice Road Truckers producer wants to film “guys working really hard at what they do”

Ice Road Truckers, the show that follows crazy men who drive trucks over frozen lakes, has been a hit for the History Channel. The show’s debut broke all records for the network.

THe show is also popular online: “Searches on the show have spiked on three consecutive Sundays and revved up 80% this weekend,” Yahoo says. Their search data suggests that the show skews slight older, as “half of all searches come from the 35-54 age bracket.”

The show’s producer, Thom Beers, who also produces the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, tells USA TODAY, says he wants to film “guys working really hard at what they do who don’t know what they’re going to get at the end of the day. I don’t celebrate guys who go to work in a factory and know exactly what their paycheck is going to be at the end of the week.”

The paper says he was asked to do the show after the History Channel’s GM, Nancy Dubuc, had an idea for a series, because “a one-time Modern Marvels look at it in 2000 was popular.” Beers says, “It’s minus 40 degrees, and the wind is whipping and sucking the life out of you. At that moment, I thought, ‘This is going to be good TV. Lousy working conditions, but great TV.'”
