Colonial House servant is gay.
One of the cast members of PBS’ forthcoming Colonial House is gay. Jonathon Allen, a grad student from North Carolina, will work as the indentured servant in the home of the lay preacher. The producer says that “[t]here were homosexuals then, but it was much more or less caught in the act. If you were, it was death,” the Orlando Sentinel reports (second item). Despite the series’ commitment to accurately representing 1628, Jonathon apparently makes it through alive, but maybe not with other consequences: “there were cases where–if you were a particularly valuable member of the labor force … they could be punished in another way. But death wasn’t actually very beneficial to a small community,” series producer Sallie Clement says.
