MTV plans Idol-like MC Battle.
After shifting Making the Band‘s focus to hip-hop for its second incarnation, MTV is now planning to adapt FOX’s American Idol format by conducting a search for hip-hop performers. MC Battle (get it?) will follow the search for a freestyling MC, who will receive “$25,000 and a Def Jam recording contract [which] will be awarded on March 1 in a live two-hour finale,” USA TODAY reports. Contestants will be selected from the first 1,000 amateur MCs to show up in New York on Feb. 24. The network plans to air all of the auditions on MTV and MTV2, and viewers will vote for the winner.
